mymind vs Cowpin: When Manual Tags Beat Magic Tags

mymind is beautiful at its job: save anything, let AI suggest tags and short summaries, browse visually when you do not want to think. If that “zero-friction hoard” feeling is why you subscribe, this post is not telling you to quit.

This post is for when magic tags stop matching how you think — and you need a library you can search literally, export, and hand to an agent without relearning a new auto-vocabulary every year.

Two bets on organization

mymind bets on AI-first organization: automatic tags, brief summaries, visual recall. You trade explicit structure for speed at save time.

Cowpin bets on tag discipline you own: you (or your extension’s suggest-tags chips) pick vocabulary; we archive full page text for search, highlights, and ask your library. Less surprise, more find the paragraph I saved.

Neither is wrong. They optimize for different failure modes.

Where mymind wins

Save friction near zero. Drop a link, image, or note — AI fills in the blanks. If you will never maintain tags anyway, auto-tags beat empty tags.

Visual browsing. mymind’s UI is built for “scroll until something clicks.” Cowpin is text- and tag-forward — better for thousands of links than mood boards.

Brief summaries at a glance. When you want a one-line reminder of what this was, generated summaries help — Cowpin shows title, archive excerpt, and your notes, not a marketing-style AI blurb on every row.

Where Cowpin wins

Tags that stay stable. Magic tags drift: “productivity” becomes “self-improvement” becomes three near-duplicates you merge by hand. Cowpin uses slug identity (same tag = one row) and duplicate URL merge so organization does not rot silently.

Search reads the page. Cowpin indexes archived text and supports semantic search over what you saved — not only titles and AI summaries. When you half-remember a quote, full-text archive wins.

Export and API. Pinboard JSON, Netscape HTML, MCP/API for agents — mymind is a destination; Cowpin is a vault you can leave. See Raindrop alternative for the same export argument in a different skin.

Extension tag suggest without auto-apply. Extension v1.4.2 offers AI tag suggestions you accept — not silent relabeling of your library.

Migration (honest)

No dedicated “Import from mymind” button. Typical path: export whatever mymind allows (often link-shaped), import URLs via Settings (HTML/JSON/CSV depending on format). Summaries and mymind-only metadata do not map 1:1 — re-archive happens on Cowpin’s side.

How to decide

Stay on mymind if: visual AI hoarding is the product and you rarely export.

Try Cowpin if: tags drifted, search failed you, or you need agents/API/export on a link library you will keep for years.
