Recall vs Cowpin: Knowledge Graph vs Exportable Link Library
Cowpin

Recall is built for a specific promise: drop in articles, YouTube, podcasts, and PDFs — get summaries and a knowledge graph that surfaces connections you did not manually wire. If that “personal knowledge base that grows itself” loop is why you pay, this post is not arguing you should leave.
This post is for the adjacent decision: you want a portable link library you can search, tag, archive, and export — including from coding agents — without your saves living inside one vendor’s graph model.
Two centers of gravity
Recall optimizes for connected notes: AI summaries, chat over your corpus, and graph-style discovery between items. The product assumes you will stay in Recall’s worldview — connections are the feature.
Cowpin optimizes for tag discipline + full-text archive: saved URLs with archived page text, semantic search and ask your library, in-app highlights, related saves (shared tags; semantic neighbors on Pro), and a knowledge graph view built from your tags, domains, notes, and embeddings — not a black-box auto-graph you cannot inspect as plain links.
We also ship Pinboard-compatible API, JSON/HTML/XML export, and MCP for Cursor and other agents. That stack is boring on purpose: scripts and agents already know how to talk to it.
Where Recall wins
Summaries on ingest. Recall’s pitch is “you save messy media; we give you structured memory.” If you rely on auto-summaries for podcasts and long video, Cowpin will feel like more work — we archive and search page text, not replace every format with a generated brief.
Graph as the main UI. Browsing connections between saves is Recall’s home screen energy. Cowpin’s graph is a lens on your library (tags, companions, domains, semantic edges) — useful, but not the whole product story.
Chat over everything. Recall-style “talk to my knowledge base” is first-class there. Cowpin has ask over archived text and tags; it is tuned for retrieval and citations, not open-ended notebook chat.
All-in-one for non-technical readers. If you want one polished app and will never export, Recall’s integrated graph + chat can be less cognitive load than tags + API vocabulary.
Where Cowpin wins
Export is the architecture, not an integration. Cowpin exports standard bookmark formats and Markdown highlights; you can round-trip through linkding, Wallabag, or Karakeep with documented fidelity fixes when formats lie. A graph that only exists inside Recall is not a migration path — it is a retention feature.
Tags you own. Magic graphs drift; tags you chose survive tool changes. Cowpin matches mymind’s trade-off from the other direction: less “surprise organization,” more find the paragraph you saved years later.
Agent recall (MCP/API). Developers and agents need stable save/search tools, not a GUI graph. Cowpin’s moat for that cohort is machine-readable libraries — the same reason we ship related saves and extension tag suggest without locking you into Chrome-only organizers.
Related saves without replacing your graph. We shipped Recall-inspiredrelated bookmarks on bookmark detail (tag overlap for everyone; semantic neighbors when embeddings exist) — connection hints on a link library, not instead of one.
Migration: honest today
Cowpin does not ship a “Import from Recall” wizard. Typical paths:
| From Recall | Cowpin today | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| URLs + titles (manual or export) | Yes | Save or bulk-import via Settings (Pinboard JSON, HTML, Instapaper/Pocket CSV, etc.) when your export is URL-shaped. |
| Recall summaries / graph edges | No | Summaries and graph links do not map to Cowpin fields; re-save URLs and let Cowpin archive fresh text. |
| Highlights | Manual | Re-highlight in Cowpin reader or paste notes; no Recall highlight ingest yet. |
| YouTube / podcast native objects | Partial | URL saves work; Cowpin archives what it can fetch — not Recall’s media-specific cards. |
If Recall publishes a stable bulk export you rely on, tell us — we will treat a mapper the same way we did Instapaper CSV and Reddit saved_posts: ship the importer before the blog claims it.
Cowpin → Recall: the way back out
Recall is not a Pinboard JSON importer. Exit from Cowpin is: export JSON or HTML from Settings, then re-import URLs into Recall if they add a path — same conservative stance as our Readwise post. We verify our exports; we do not certify Recall’s import UI.
How to decide
Stay on Recall if: auto-summaries, graph browsing, and chat-over-corpus are the product — and you accept vendor-shaped memory.
Try Cowpin if: you want archived full-text search, tag control, highlight export, standard bookmark exits, and agents that save/search without a human clicking a graph.
Or split roles. Use Recall for “connect and summarize new media”; mirror URLs into Cowpin for search, MCP, and long-horizon archive. That is the same pattern as Reader + Cowpin — two tools, one export habit.
